Robert Pip Patterson is a third generation colonial in America. His grandfather, James came to Hackensack in 1696 from Scotland. He was a merchant of dry goods and a tavern. Pip's father had a dream of building a new family estate in the Hudson Valley of New York. Robert Patterson Sr. was a promising young man with the backing of rich merchants and the governor of the New York colony. He establishes the new settlement of 'Patterson' in the Hudson River Valley. Life is good and Robert and Mary Patterson have two children; Christine and Robert Jr. or Pip. In a sudden killing raid by Abenaki Indians, the Patterson family is all but wiped out. Pip, a mere boy at the time, is shot and left for dead. Christine, his older sister, was captured and enslaved. Found by friendly Indians, young Pip is nursed back to health. Years pass and the Mohican tribe adopt Pip, and he becomes a respected member. Learning his sister is still alive; Pip is determined to find her. He and his Mohican friend and brother, Keme (Kee-meh), organize a surprise raid on the Abenaki tribes along the northeastern shores of Lake Champlain. Pip is a name soon to be respected by the Iroquois and Delaware nations and hated by the Algonquin and Huron nations of the north.
